Dysphagia meal delivery for older adults

Soft and Puréed Meals for Older Adults with Dysphagia.

We are developing a dysphagia support meal range for older adults who need softer, smoother or texture-modified meals at home.

The first meals are being developed around puréed, Level 4-style needs: smooth texture, familiar flavours, clear labels and simple weekly fridge support for families and carers.

Why we are making it

Texture-modified meals should still feel like proper meals.

When swallowing or chewing becomes difficult, food can quickly turn into a daily worry. Families may be blending meals at home, checking textures by eye, worrying about hidden lumps or watching the same few safe foods get repeated again and again.

Wholesome Meals is developing a more practical option: familiar dysphagia-friendly ready meals for older adults, made to support a safer, simpler and more repeatable weekly food routine.

Made for older adults at home. A meal plan for real kitchens, real carers, real families and real weekly routines.
Starting with puréed meals. The first developed range will focus on smoother Level 4-style meals before other textures are considered.
Familiar meals, made better. Cottage pie, chicken dinner, fish pie, casseroles and comforting British-style meals — smoother, more nourishing and easier to manage.
Clear labels. Texture notes, large heating steps, allergens, storage and serving guidance.
Weekly fridge support. The goal is to make mealtimes easier without shopping, cooking and blending from scratch every day.
Why nutrition matters

When meals get smoother, every spoonful has to work harder.

Dysphagia can make eating feel harder, slower and less appealing. That means the food cannot just be safe in texture — it also needs to help with strength, energy, digestion, variety and appetite.

01
Smaller appetites need better meals. When someone is eating less, a thin blended portion is not enough. Meals need useful energy, protein and real ingredients built in.
02
Protein supports strength. Chicken, fish, beef, dairy, beans and lentils can help make familiar meals more useful for muscle maintenance, fullness and recovery.
03
Fibre still matters. Texture-modified eating can become low in plant variety. We want vegetables, pulses, potatoes and grains worked in carefully where the texture allows.
04
Bones need support too. Older-adult meals should make calcium-aware choices easier, using dairy, fish, greens, pulses or fortified options where they fit naturally.
05
Heart and brain habits add up. More plants, fish, beans, greens, grains, herbs and sensible salt choices can help make the weekly box more useful for healthier ageing.
06
Nutrition only works if it gets eaten. The goal is not clinical purée. It is familiar food made smoother, more nourishing and more likely to be finished.
Built into the recipe

Proper elderly nutrition, made easier to swallow.

The range is being developed to do more than meet a texture need. We want each meal to carry the nutrition older adults actually need across the week: protein, vegetables, fibre where suitable, calcium-aware ingredients, moist sauces and familiar flavours that encourage eating.

It takes the thinking behind our older-adult nutrition range — protein considered, calcium-aware, fibre and plants, Mediterranean-style, DASH-style and MIND-inspired ideas — and adapts it for smoother dysphagia support meals.

Protein-led meals Classic recipes built around useful protein sources like chicken, fish, beef, lentils, beans, dairy or cheese-style sauces.
More plants, less beige Vegetables, pulses, herbs and gentle plant bases worked into meals so smoother food still brings colour and variety.
Calcium-aware choices Fish pie, cauliflower cheese-style meals, dairy sauces, greens and pulses used where they make sense for the recipe.
Gut-friendly thinking Fibre from vegetables, lentils, beans, potatoes and grains considered carefully without making the texture grainy or hard to manage.
Heart-aware flavour Flavour built through vegetables, herbs, gravy-style sauces and balanced seasoning instead of simply leaning on extra salt.
Brain-friendly patterns MIND-inspired ideas used practically: greens, beans, fish, grains and vegetables repeated gently across the weekly range.

Texture levels

Start with the texture they have been advised to follow.

Dysphagia meals should match the texture level recommended by a speech and language therapist, dietitian, GP or care team. Our first developed range is focused on puréed meals.

Texture What it means Wholesome Meals note
First focus Level 4 Puréed

Smooth food with no lumps. Usually eaten with a spoon and normally does not require chewing.

This is the first range we are developing. Final meal suitability will be confirmed on each product before launch.

Level 5 Minced & Moist

Soft, moist food with very small pieces. Some chewing may still be needed.

This may be considered later if families, carers and care providers tell us it would be useful.

Level 6 Soft & Bite-Sized

Soft food served in small bite-sized pieces. Chewing is still required.

This may suit some people with milder chewing or swallowing difficulties, but it is not the first launch focus.

How the plan will work

A weekly meal routine that families can help manage.

The aim is simple: choose suitable dysphagia support meals, receive them chilled, keep them in the fridge and heat them with clear instructions when needed.

For families, it means less daily blending, fewer last-minute food worries and a more reliable way to keep familiar meals available.

Who should decide the right texture level?

The right texture level should be recommended by a speech and language therapist, dietitian, GP or care professional. If you are unsure, please check before choosing texture-modified meals.
